Chill Hill Winery
As you drive through beautiful downtown Baroda, Michigan, you'll see a mural of two ladies chillin', dressed in red & white, enjoying a bottle of wine.
Behind the walls of that mural is Chill Hill Winery & Tasting Room.
Chill Hill, the new kid on the block in Baroda, opened in June of 2019 but is no stranger to the area or the industry! The family who owns it has farmed in Baroda for years.
One thing people don't know about Chill Hill is that the owners, Ashley & Norma, are a grandmother, granddaughter duo! You certainly don't hear of that too often, but family tradition; a passion for wine cultivated over generations is the core of Chill Hill.
Less than three miles away from the tasting room is one of the most extensive wine grape vineyards East of the Rocky Mountains with nearly 400 acres, producing over 30 different varietals of wine grapes. Arrowhead Vineyard was established by James Nitz & began growing juice grapes in 1970. The farm has been in the Nitz family for seven generations, is one of the oldest vineyards in Michigan, and is now owned and operated by Ashley's Dad, Dan Nitz.
The vineyard commercially produced juice grapes & wine grapes, sold them to both large & small wine companies for years. Dan knew the industry was growing, changing and wine grapes were the future. A future he was bound to be a part of.
Ever since Ashley can remember, her Dad dreamt about having a winery. He's dedicated his entire life to converting the vineyard from juice to wine grapes to pursue that dream. Ashley grew up working on the farm & over the years, that dream quickly became hers, too. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
They decided to turn their dream into reality & Ashley got to work! After receiving her degree in Viticulture and creating the brand that is Chill Hill, she now owns & operates a thriving business as a female in her 20's!
She understood that to be competitive with the other wineries in the area, Chill Hill would need to be different. She realized not everyone enjoys a bottle of wine. Cider was added to the menu, so now there's something for everyone.
Chill Hill offers ten ciders on tap & 14 different wine options.
The tasting room is located between two very different parts of the county & perfectly embodies a little bit of both.
At Chill Hill it doesn't matter if you're wearing a suit and tie or steel-toed boots. There is a little something for everyone & everyone is welcome!
